November 27, 2017 – In a groundbreaking new report, World Wildlife Fund WWF has unveiled the extensive indirect advantages of conserving wild tigers that go beyond just preserving these majestic creatures. Beyond the Stripes: Save Tigers, Save So Much More highlights the myriad ways in which investments med at protecting wild tiger habitats have significant, often overlooked impacts on biodiversity and the people who dep on it for their livelihoods and well-being.
Tiger landscapes encompass a wide range of ecosystemsfrom vast mangrove forests in the Sundarbans to snow-covered mountnous regions in Bhutan. These areas are not only home to tigers but also harbor critical environments that provide essential services such as water regulation, carbon sequestration, and disaster risk reduction, among others.
The report underscores the potential for safeguarding tiger ecosyste protect at least nine major watersheds that supply freshwater to up to 830 million people in Asia. This includes crucial sources of fresh water in urban areas across India, Malaysia, and Thland. Moreover, ensuring the integrity of tiger habitats could contribute to mntning forests essential for carbon storage, thereby combating climate change.
Every dollar invested in conserving wild tigers indirectly supports a multitude of threatened species and ecosystems critical to millions of people, sd Michael Baltzer, leader of WWF's Tigers Alive initiative. Protecting tiger landscapes not only benefits tigers but also secures natural capital that is vital for Asia’s sustnable development.
Tigers occupy apex predator roles in their ecosystems, requiring extensive territories to thrive alongside numerous other angered species such as Asian elephants, leopards, and orangutans. This interconnectivity underscores the importance of conservation strategies med at preserving tiger habitats to safeguard biodiversity.
However, tigers are critically angered due to habitat loss, with a staggering 95 reduction in their global range since historical times. Half 43 of present suitable tiger habitat could face imminent loss from unsustnable agricultural expansion and urbanization trs over the coming decades.
The report also cautions that forest degradation remns rampant in areas critical for tigers. Countries like Malaysia and Indonesia are among the world's leading contributors to carbon emissions associated with deforestation, which risks turning key tiger landscapes into net emitters instead of carbon sinks if current trs persist.
Success in protecting wild tigers is indicative of Asia’s path toward sustnable development, Baltzer emphasized. With rapid economic growth in Asia, prioritizing tiger conservation will significantly d in safeguarding natural resources that are indispensable for meeting regional sustnability goals.
The preservation of tigers and their habitats has the potential to boost community engagement through eco-tourism initiatives, provide essential ecosystem services like pollination and pest control, contribute to local economies through sustnable livelihoods, and ensure access to medicines derived from local flora.
As we celebrate the resilience and beauty of wild tigers amidst conservation efforts worldwide, it is imperative to recognize that their survival contributes immensely to global biodiversity and welfare. The future health of our planet deps on our collective commitment to protect these magnificent creatures while preserving critical ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations.
Investments in tiger habitat conservation benefit a wide array of threatened species and crucial ecosystem services that support millions of people worldwide.
Tiger landscapes overlap with globally significant ecosystems, including freshwater sources, carbon sinks, and natural disaster mitigation zones.
The decline of tigers has far-reaching impacts on biodiversity loss and the health of ecosystems across Asia.
Urgent action is needed to protect tiger habitats from unsustnable land use changes that threaten their survival.
The conservation of wild tigers supports sustnable development goals in Asia by safeguarding essential environmental services and fostering community engagement.
