Explore the Unseen Benefits of Saving Wild Tigers with Our New WWF Report: Beyond the Stripes
November 27, 2017
WWF has unveiled a groundbreaking report titled Beyond the Stripes: Save tigers, save so much more which highlights the myriad unseen advantages of investing in conservation efforts med at preserving wild tiger populations across Asia. The findings emphasize that funding initiatives for the protection and restoration of these majestic creatures also safeguards an array of wildlife species as well as essential ecosystem services crucial to millions of people's welfare.
The report identifies that conserving tiger habitats, including vast ecosystems ranging from mangrove forests in the Sundarbans to snow-capped mountns in Bhutan, helps protect nine major watersheds providing freshwater for up to 830 million individuals across Asia including urban populations in India, Malaysia, and Thland. Moreover, safeguarding these landscapes can help mitigate climate change by preserving the last standing forests crucial for carbon sequestration.
Every dollar invested in saving wild tigers contributes not only to their survival but also to the conservation of countless threatened species and vital ecosystem services, explns Michael Baltzer, WWF's Leader of Tigers Alive. Protecting tiger landscapes ensures freshwater regulation, reduces climate change impacts, offers a source of clean r, medicinal resources, jobs, and much more.
However, wild tigers are critically angered, with their habitats under threat due to the loss of nearly 95 of their global range. The cats are now confined to fragmented populations within Asia's dwindling forests, with approximately half 43 of suitable tiger habitat at risk from unsustnable agricultural expansion and urbanization in coming years, according to the report.
Deforestation rates continue alarmingly high across tiger range states like Malaysia and Indonesia, which rank among global leaders in carbon emissions due to forest degradation. If current trs persist, key tiger landscapes may transition from being carbon sinks to becoming net emitters of greenhouse gases. In Sumatra alone the only place where tigers coexist with orangutans and rhinos in the same habitat deforestation has reduced natural forest cover by over 50 over the past three decades.
Protecting wild tigers serves as a perfect barometer for Asia's sustnable development, says Baltzer. With rapid economic growth, prioritizing tiger conservation significantly contributes to securing natural capital essential for meeting regional sustnable development goals. Protecting tiger habitats is a win-win situation that benefits not only tigers but also future generations.
As an apex predator, tigers require extensive territories for thriving alongside numerous angered species like Asian elephants, leopards, and orangutans. Safeguarding their habitat thus ensures the protection of other threatened wildlife, including less well-known but equally vulnerable creatures whose conservation remns vital.
