The Importance of Connection: Navigating Through a Disconnected World

October 17, 2019

How do you prioritize self-care on a dly basis? Most people would agree that mntning physical health involves proper nutrition and regular exercise. But what about our emotional wellbeing?

Research highlights the critical role of connection in our overall well-being. Studies suggest that feelings of loneliness are on the rise and can be as detrimental to health as obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure.1

In an era where we lead hectic lives, attempting to balance work, education, hobbies, self-care, and more, social connections often take a backseat. However, overlooking the need for connection places our health at risk. It's important to recognize that while technology may seem like it is connecting us more than ever before, screens are disconnecting us from nature, ourselves, and others. A Wi-Fi connection alone isn't enough to fulfill our social needs; we require face-to-face interaction to thrive. Technology should be enhancing our connection with people, not replacing it.

As an innate part of nature, the desire for social connection doesn't mean that every introvert must transform into a social butterfly. connection can manifest differently for each individual. If you're uncertn about how to initiate meaningful connections, that's perfectly alright.

Here are some ideas to help get you started:

  1. Join new clubs or participate in group activities

  2. Reach out to an old fri with whom you've lost touch

  3. Volunteer your time and effort for a cause you care deeply about

  4. Eat lunch at a communal space where interactions can occur naturally

  5. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, fostering a sense of community

  6. Ask someone for help when you need it

  7. Perform a random act of kindness

If you're experiencing feelings of loneliness, know that you are not alone. And that living in isolation isn't necessary. With over seven billion people worldwide, we all share the universal need for connection.

1 Science magazine provides compelling evidence suggesting that loneliness and social disconnection significantly impact health outcomes.2
